"I first started using drugs and alcohol at age 13. At that time I had no idea how much and for how long it would wreck havoc in my life. Soon, I no longer cared about my family. I tried to run away on several occasions and the police were called countless times. My friends soon expressed concern over my use, so I just stopped being friends with them and instead connected myself to people that used drugs and alcohol like I did. It would not be until much later that it would become clear to me that my life was entirely unmanageable. The most serious criminal infraction was a felony criminal damage charge. I was placed on probation and ordered to pay restitution.  To this day, there are jobs that I will not be considered for because of my record.

After years of ignoring deeply concerned family, coaches and teachers, my life had been completely drained by reckless decisions and risky behaviors. My life stopped. Terrible things were happening and I had no control. I knew I needed help. The mending process began in the following days and dignity and purpose were restored in my life. I attended an intensive outpatient program and attended 12 step meetings. Another central component in my sobriety was doing physical activity. Since then my lifestyle choices have been centered on health-conscious living. The results were unmistakable- the greater investment I made in myself, the better I felt.

Today, I still attend meetings regularly and surround myself with other people who are also sober. I work with sponsors and sponsees and my family and friends know about my history. They are supportive and proud of me for continuing my efforts toward personal growth. As a sober person I feel happy and whole. When I was out drinking and using, my life was devoid of any meaning. In sobriety, my life experiences are more full and enjoyable – they’re real."
